Frequently Asked Questions
TaxLifeboat was founded on the premise that every taxpayer deserves honest, unbiased, and affordable help with their IRS tax problems. The company's mission is for taxpayers to resolve their IRS issues by implementing tax solutions that best fit their circumstances and objectives. TaxLifeboat offers more IRS-tested solutions than anyone and, if you don't like your possible solutions, you owe us nothing. For these reasons our service is recommended by tax and financial professionals, human resource departments, employee assistance professionals, and social workers across the country.
With TaxLifeboat you come first. We're your tax resolution staff and we work for you. That means our tax experts' job is to report back to you and explain in plain English your situation and your options including the pros and cons of each. For example, there are four aspects of your personal, financial and tax situation that determine which tax solutions are available to you. With TaxLifeboat, you learn how these apply to you and what your alternatives are so you can make informed decisions. Finally, fully understanding your overall status, you tell us which solution you want us to implement for you. By the way, we're not shy about telling you what we think and recommend based on our experience.
There are several reasons to act now:
* If your finances are at a low point, it's an ideal time to negotiate with the IRS.
* The longer you wait, the more the IRS will charge in interest and penalties (which are not tax deductable and will double what you owe in five years).
* The IRS will become more aggressive in their collection efforts by garnishing your income, seizing funds from your bank account, and the like. For example, if the IRS seizes your property and sells it, the sales price is nearly always less than what you could get by selling it yourself.
* The further you are in the IRS's examination and collection process, the fewer options you have to resolve the problem.
* The worry and frustration will continue to hang over you until it's fixed.
* Knowing that the IRS is waiting to collect inhibits your desire to earn money and enjoy your life.
* TaxLifeboat empowers you and helps you regain your peace of mind.
Most of the time “yes” but it depends on the specifics of your case. TaxLifeboat starts by contacting the IRS to start the negotiation process. In many situations, we can get the IRS to release wage garnishments and bank account levies as part of the initial negotiation process. We can also request that a hold be put on collection activity while we work towards getting you the best possible resolution of your tax liability. This gives us time to determine what other “safety-valve” programs you qualify for and which options best fit your circumstances and objectives. We work with you so you make an informed decision which strategy you want us to implement.
Yes. The IRS is the largest debt collector in the world. The agency can and will take up to 100% of your paycheck, the cash in your bank accounts, your retirement funds and income (including Social Security payments), and your home and other assets. Furthermore, the IRS is becoming more aggressive in exercising these powers. Note that seized assets are typically sold at sharply discounted prices so the net proceeds may not pay what you owe the IRS.
Offer in Compromise (OIC) is probably the most well known tax reduction program. The OIC (and other “safety-valve” programs) use the same criteria to determine whether you are eligible. The yardstick is the IRS’s “Reasonable Collection Potential” or RCP. This figure estimates how much the government can collect from you based on your income, expenses, assets, and liabilities. The lower your RCP, the better your chances at a reduction. Our tax advisers quickly analyze your RCP and, where possible, reduce it so you obtain the best possible resolution you qualify for.
To begin settling your case, TaxLifeboat requests tax records from the IRS to determine which, if any, returns need to be filed. We quickly prepare the forms and file for you so you know what, if any, taxes you owe. Failure to file is one of the common ways people end up in IRS collections. Keep in mind that, if you have unfiled taxes, you are “out of compliance” and the IRS will not negotiate a resolution with you.
When you have unfiled tax returns, the IRS often computes what is called a “Substitute Tax Return” to estimate your tax liability. This is NOT the same as filing your own taxes since the amount the IRS comes up with is usually grossly overstated. When the IRS files a tax return for you they always file it as single or married filing separate with no dependants. They also do not include any exemptions, deduction, or credits. When we prepare your return, we make sure that you get all deductions you are entitled to and that you know where you stand and what solutions are available.
TaxLifeboat uses 130 different strategies to help people resolve their IRS problems and eight of them cover different spousal issues. An Innocent Spouse defense, if accepted by the IRS, provides you relief from additional tax you owe if your spouse or former spouse failed to report income, reported income improperly or claimed improper deductions or credits. There are various factors the IRS considers in determining whether someone qualifies for innocent tax relief. TaxLifeboat can make a determination on whether the IRS is likely to grant you this relief as well as file all necessary paperwork on your behalf.
For simple cases an IRS resolution can be done in a few days. For others, like an Offer in Compromise or Innocent Spouse defense it can take several months for the IRS to decide your case. Regardless of the amount of time your case takes, TaxLifeboat will be in regular contact with the IRS and with you as we work together towards the best possible resolution of your tax liability.
TaxLifeboat is used and recommended by tax professionals, attorneys, HR departments, and many other advisers because we are honest, professional, and affordable. Our fees vary with the complexity of your IRS issues and the estimated time to help you resolve them. Thus, you will know the full cost before we begin. Plus, you have a 100%, money-back guarantee if you are not satisfied with our service.
Our process is professional and affordable because we spent seven years researching tax resolution strategies, wrote a book and software program on the subject (Happy About Tax Relief by Thomas M. Evans), and filed numerous patents on an efficient, comprehensive method for fixing IRS problems that uses 400,000 solution algorithms. We did the analytic work that tax professionals said couldn't be done. Once it was complete, they said we should charge what others do. We'd rather provide an excellent service for many distressed taxpayers and pass the savings on to you.
TaxLifeboat doesn't make any promises to resolve your IRS tax problem. We don't state, for instance, that we'll settle your tax debt for "pennies on the dollar." That would be unrealistic and unethical. In fact, after viewing the pros and cons of all their options, some clients end up choosing to pay the taxes to avoid penalties and interest (which are not tax deductable and can double what you owe in five years). Furthermore, if a client doesn't value our work, they can receive a 100% refund. Sure some people take advantage of us but most see the merit of our service and recommend it to others.
TaxLifeboat is used and recommended by tax professionals across the country. If fact, they were our first customers. Later we decided to offer our services directly to taxpayers. In addition, TaxLifeboat is used by social workers with their clients through CareConnect USA, LLC, which has 800 help lines to social workers, human resources departments, employee break rooms, and many other locations across the country. Also, CLC Incorporated refers our services to 25,000 US companies and 27 million households.
You've seen companies advertise on TV saying they'll "settle your tax debt for pennies on the dollar" and making other promises. The strategy they rely on is called Offer in Compromise (OIC), for which they charge thousands of dollars in fees. What they don't tell you is that more than 80% of OIC cases are rejected and you forfeit important taxpayer rights in just applying for the OIC. By the time you learn that your OIC case has been rejected, the tax mill has gotten your money, you still owe the taxes, and you have even more to pay in interest and penalties. TaxLifeboat lets you know ahead of time if you qualify for an OIC and, if you do, we're happy to help you by creating the implement documents for you.
